Study in USA

Student guide

The United States is a first choice for students who want ranked universities, flexible majors, and post-study work through Optional Practical Training (OPT). Most Indian students apply for a master’s (MS/MBA) or a bachelor’s, then enter on an F-1 visa. A counsellor helps you pick the right university mix — not only the brand name, but also budget, STEM eligibility, and visa strength.

Main intakes Jan · May · Aug
Student visa F-1
After study OPT + STEM OPT
Typical duration 1–4 years

Why students choose USA

  • Large choice of public and private universities, including many STEM-designated master’s programmes.
  • F-1 students can usually work on campus during term and apply for OPT after completing the degree.
  • STEM degrees may add 24 months of STEM OPT after the first 12 months of OPT — useful for IT, engineering, and data roles.
  • You can apply to several universities in the same cycle and compare aid, location, and class profile.

These are common choices, not a ranking. A counsellor will match courses to your marks, budget, and career plan.

Intakes and when to apply

Intake Starts When students should begin
Fall (main) August / September Start 10–12 months earlier. This is the widest intake for MS and bachelor’s.
Spring January Start 8–10 months earlier. Many MS programmes are open; fewer scholarships.
Summer May Limited courses. Useful if you missed Fall or need a short pathway.

What you typically need

  1. Academic transcripts and degree certificates (10+2 for bachelor’s; bachelor’s for master’s).
  2. SOP (statement of purpose), résumé, and usually 2–3 recommendation letters.
  3. English score: IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo — university-wise cut-offs differ.
  4. GRE or GMAT only if the programme asks for it.
  5. Passport, proof of funds for the I-20, and later SEVIS + DS-160 for the visa.

Indicative cost

Tuition (indicative) USD 18,000–50,000 / year
Living (indicative) USD 12,000–20,000 / year
Key extra SEVIS fee, visa fee, health insurance

Public state universities are often more affordable than private ones. Graduate assistantships can reduce tuition. Always budget for the first year as shown on the I-20.

Visa in simple steps

F-1 student visa

  1. Receive admission and Form I-20 from a SEVP-certified school.
  2. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and complete the DS-160 visa form.
  3. Book the F-1 visa appointment and carry academics, I-20, and funds proof.
  4. After approval, enter the USA up to 30 days before the programme start date.

Work while you study

On-campus work is commonly allowed up to 20 hours a week in term time. Off-campus work needs authorisation (CPT/OPT) — do not work without it.

After you graduate

After a qualifying degree you can apply for 12 months of OPT. STEM-designated programmes may add 24 months of STEM OPT. This is work authorisation, not a green card.

Scholarships and funding

  • University merit scholarships and departmental awards (more common for Fall).
  • Graduate assistantships (TA/RA) on selected campuses.
  • Education loans in India against admission + I-20, after a counsellor reviews the cost sheet.

How Trencher helps

Begin shortlisting 10–12 months before your target intake. Keep 4–8 weeks after the I-20 for SEVIS, slot booking, and visa interview practice.

  • University shortlist by budget, ranking band, and STEM/OPT fit.
  • SOP, LOR guidance, and application filing.
  • I-20 review, funds planning, and F-1 mock interview.
