Student guide
Germany is known for engineering and research, and for public universities that often charge only a semester contribution instead of high tuition. The trade-off is a longer, document-heavy path: APS certificate for most Indian academics, uni-assist or direct university portals, German or English language proof, and a blocked account (or accepted alternate funds) for the national visa.

Why students choose Germany
- Many public universities have no or low tuition; you mainly pay a semester fee and living costs.
- World-class engineering, automotive, and applied-science (Fachhochschule) options.
- 18-month job-search residence is available after an eligible German degree.
- You can study in English at master’s level, though daily life is easier with basic German.

What you typically need
- APS certificate (required for most Indian school and bachelor’s documents).
- University application via uni-assist or the university portal: transcripts, SOP, CV, LORs if asked.
- Language: IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught courses, or TestDaF/DSH/Goethe for German-taught courses.
- Admission / conditional letter, blocked-account confirmation, and health insurance for the visa.
- Passport, visa form, and biometrics at VFS / the embassy.
Indicative cost
Public tuition
Often semester fee only (EUR 150–400)*
Living + blocked account
As per current embassy amount / year
Private / some states
EUR 8,000–20,000 / year
*Some states and all private universities charge tuition. The blocked-account figure is set by the German authorities and changes — use the live embassy number, not an old blog.
Visa in simple steps
German national student visa
- Complete APS, then apply to universities (watch uni-assist deadlines).
- Open the blocked account for the official amount and buy recognised health insurance.
- Book the national student-visa appointment with admission and funds papers.
- After arrival, register your address and convert the visa into a residence permit.
Work while you study
Students can usually work 140 full days or 280 half days a year (or the current equivalent). Do not exceed the limit printed on your permit.
After you graduate
After an eligible German degree you can apply for an 18-month job-seeker residence. A qualifying job can later support an EU Blue Card or another work title.
Scholarships and funding
- DAAD awards (competitive; apply early).
- D Deutschlandstipendium and university Deutschlandstipendium-style awards.
- Education loans mainly for living cost and any private tuition.
How Trencher helps
Start APS 12–15 months before a winter intake. University + visa together rarely fit into a 4-month rush.
- Course fit (university vs UAS), language track, and APS timeline.
- uni-assist / portal applications and SOP.
- Blocked-account, insurance, and visa appointment checklist.
